What Is Grokipedia? xAI’s AI-Written Encyclopedia
Grokipedia is an online encyclopedia built by xAI, Elon Musk's artificial intelligence company. Instead of human volunteers writing and editing articles the way Wikipedia does, Grokipedia's entries are generated and maintained by AI — specifically xAI's Grok models, which write the articles and run fact-checks over them.
It launched publicly on October 27, 2025 as "Grokipedia v0.1" with roughly 885,000 articles. Musk announced it on X, calling it "better than Wikipedia even at 0.1" and promising version 1.0 would be ten times better. The official home of the project is grokipedia.com, where you can browse entries and sign in with an X account.
How it actually works
Unlike Wikipedia, you cannot directly edit a Grokipedia article. If you spot a mistake, you submit a correction request through Grok, and the AI reviews it and applies approved changes itself. The platform combines primary sources with community-submitted material, then synthesizes it into entries with listed sources.
A lot of the early content was adapted from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license — which is also why early reviewers noticed the writing sometimes reads like Wikipedia with the serial numbers filed off. xAI says the project is fully open source.
Why Musk built it
Musk has argued for years that Wikipedia carries editorial bias, and Grokipedia is his answer: an encyclopedia where an AI, rather than a community of editors, decides what the "neutral" version of a topic looks like. Whether an AI can actually be neutral is one of the biggest open questions hanging over the project — researchers have documented measurable political lean in large language models, Grok included.
Where it stands now
Growth has been fast. Reports put the article count above 5.6 million by early 2026, and xAI shipped a visible redesign, v0.3, on October 1, 2026, with featured articles and a most-read shelf. There was also a quiet stretch — updates stalled for about five months before resuming in the fall of 2026 — which is worth knowing if you notice some entries look stale.
